Abalone is one of the most treacherous sea creatures to harvest. Due to extensive overfishing, it is also one of the most protected fisheries in California.
According to the reading of The Abalone Rangers by Marcia,he explains why abaloness are very expensive. Like many other once formerly plentiful Californian sea dwellers such as the Olympic oyster, Monterey sardines, the slow-growing wild abalone was tragically over popular. For this reason, it's often over fished. It also had a hard time surviving disease and pollution.
Abalones are so sensitive they are actually used as an indicating species for water quality. Other contributing factors include loss of their habitat by other species. When I worked at the Japanese restaurants abalones are the most demanded (popular) menu items; however I barely saw the restaurant which is carrying abalones on their menu. To keep this alive, there are many factors which chefs should concern such as quality of water, temperature, and light exposure.
In my experience, live sweet shrimp is another delicate item on the menu. Actually, I really enjoyed carrying sweet shrimp in alive and make sushi in front of customers. They loved it. It's exactly like sensitive abalones which are very popular to sell but hard to take care of. I hope these two popular items wouldn't be overfishing, so that we can enjoy there at reasonable price at many places.

The issues in regards to abalones helps to point out the serious issues that are occurring in our waters, currently. The oil spill has caused many complications in our waters for fisherman and consumers around the world. It is obvious that this is not a laughing manner and that we need to do our best to preserve what is left of the species in our waters. Unfortunately, Monterey sardines and Olympic oysters have already been victimized by over-fishing. If we want to keep enjoying one of the most delicate creatures in the sea, we really must do our best to preserve them. --Julia G.
